A dying art form is taking center stage at the Alcorn County Fair this week.

Deadline is noon Thursday for the baked goods and canned goods competition.

“The baked goods competition is the place to showcase your baking and cooking skills,” said fair committee member Sandy Mitchell. “There are some awesome bakers in Alcorn County and we can’t wait to see what they cook up this year.”

Three age divisions are available to enter in the baked goods competition.

“We welcome ages 12 up to adults,” she said.

Classes include yeast breads, quick breads, cakes, special occasion cakes, candy, cookies, cupcakes and pie. Entries can be dropped off inside the Crossroads Arena on Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon.

Participants can have multiple entries. All entries must be wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Each entry must be displayed on sturdy, disposable containers.

“If anyone brings a entry in a covered cake or pie dish, they will need to remove the entry and take the covered carrier,” said Mitchell.

Registration will occur by number only. Each participant will be provided a number at registration and all of his/her entries will be numbered respectively. Entries will be judged according to the Modified Danish System. Items requiring refrigeration are not eligible for entry into the contest.

Ribbons will be awarded.

Also due for turn-in between 9 a.m. and noon on Thursday are canned goods.

Canning is a method of preservation that takes skill, said Mitchell.

“Canning is the process to preserve food so that it’s always as if it was fresh out of the garden or freshly made,” she added.

A variety of fruits and vegetables can be entered, as well as jellies, preserves, pickles and relishes.

Only standard clear glass jars for canning can be entered. Each jar must include a label with the name of the product. All canned products exhibited must have been canned since August 2016.
