GLEN -- On April 1, it was Tyler Nelms doing all the fooling.

Nelms (2-1) tossed a two-hit shutout, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in helping Kossuth record its fourth straight win.

The sophomore hurler had plenty of help from his offense as the Aggies blasted three long balls in a 7-0 decision over Alcorn Central in Division 1-3A.

“That was probably Tyler’s best performance of the year,” said first-year KHS coach Daniel Threadgill. “He located when he had to and through his breaking ball and knuckle ball for strikes -- that was the key to everything.”

Kossuth (11-3, 3-1) scored the only run it would need in the second. Michael Hicks doubled with one out and Dylan Rider followed with a single. Hicks was waved around when Central misplayed the ball in the outfield.

The Aggies got another gift run in the second. Jake Glidewell was hit by a pitch with two outs and eventually scored on another outfield misplay following a Tyler Box single.

Central got a second-inning single by Trevor Smith and a fourth-inning safety by Hunter Shaw. Shaw was erased trying to steal and Nelms went on to go nine-up, nine-down over the final three innings.

Kossuth, meanwhile, added five runs over its final three at-bats -- all courtesy the long ball. Box and Jordan Woodruff hit solo shots in the fourth and fifth frames, respectively and Justin Whitaker, who had two of Kossuth’s five extra-base hits, put icing on the cake with a three-run shot to center in the seventh.

After hitting just five homers last season, Kossuth has recorded 12 dingers in 14 games.

“That’s been huge,” said Threadgill. “It’s a product of working hard in the cage and knowing what to look for at the plate.”

Central (6-9-1, 1-3) will play a pair of non-league contests at home on Saturday against Haywood County and Tishomingo County. Kossuth returns to action Tuesday with a 1-3A contest at Booneville.

Kossuth has recorded back-to-back shutouts -- both against league foes. The Aggies, with three total blankings on the season, haven’t given up a run in 15 consecutive innings.
