City officials identified the worker as Wayne Bennett. It appeared he had a broken leg and injuries to his other leg. A second individual was also taken to the hospital to be checked out for a possible shoulder injury, said John Michael Tucker, construction works supervisor.
He said replacement of a sewer line was in progress at Magnolia and Oak Lane. Bennett and the other worker were in an area about 15 feet deep when the bank caved at about 3 p.m., trapping them from the waist down.
Plywood was used to brace the walls to keep more dirt from caving in.
Tucker speculated the vibration of the equipment caused the dirt to work loose and fall.
First responders dug Bennett out.
Alderman Chip Wood, serving as mayor pro tem Tuesday evening, requested prayers for Bennett.
