MERIDIAN -- Five area standouts, as well as a local coach, helped District 1 claim the bronze medal in baseball at the 19th Annual State Games of Mississippi.
The 18-deep club -- which included Alcorn Central’s Trae Bain and Jake Beck, Corinth’s Lew Johnson, Booneville’s Tre Welch and Wheeler’s Brandon Woodruff -- went 2-2, good enough for a third-place finish in the eight-team tournament.
“They played well,” said Alcorn Central Head Coach Jeff Wood, who directed the club alongside Mooreville’s Jamie Russell. “We had the same record as last year, just did it a different way.”
The club opened with a 7-1 win over District 5 on Thursday, with Woodruff’s two doubles aiding the cause. They followed with a 6-5 walk-off homer win over District 8 -- which includes powers Oak Grove and Sumrall -- on Friday, earning a spot in the medal round.
“We played on Sunday, which is what you want to do,” said Wood.
District 5 turned the tables on Saturday, edging the local squad 6-5. Sunday saw District 5 advance to the finals with a 6-1 decision, aided by four errors by District 1.
District 6 -- the Jackson area -- claimed the tournament title for the 10th straight year.
“It was an honor to coach these kids. They had a good time and played hard,” said Wood. “We also saw a lot of good baseball.”
Bain, who played third and also served as designated hitter, finished 5-for-8 with a triple and a homer. Welch pounded out plenty of hits, including a triple in the medal round, while playing shortstop.
“They both had a really good tournament,” said Wood.
Beck saw action at catcher, with Johnson playing in left and Woodruff at first over the four-day event.
Tryouts were held in early June with rising juniors and seniors eligible for participation in their respective districts. District 1’s other 13 players hailed from Mooreville (4), North Pontotoc (2), Tupelo (2), Amory, Mantachie, Pontotoc, Shannon and West Point.
