Two people have been hospitalized following separate roll-over crashes in Alcorn County Thursday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
Neely Eckford, 52, of County Road 547 in Alcorn County, was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center after an 11:44 a.m. crash Thursday on County Road 514 in southern Alcorn County about 2.5 miles from U.S. 45.
Deputy David Derrick said it appeared that the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Eckford left the road on the right side and hit a culvert at a gravel drive, causing the vehicle to flip. It came to rest upside down.
The driver was alert at the scene and appeared to have some contusions and bruises, he said.
In a separate crash at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Joseph C. Carter, 81, of Booneville, was traveling east on U.S. 72 near Theo in a 2008 Dodge van when he apparently lost control and overturned several times. He had to be extricated from the vehicle.
He was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Carter was wearing a seat belt.
MHP also investigated a fatal crash in Itawamba County in the Fairview area on Mississippi Highway 25 at about 4:55 p.m. Wednesday.
Jose Rigual III, 23, of Golden, was driving north in a 1990 Lexus when he apparently attempted to make a left turn onto Burnt Fields Road and entered the path of a southbound 1998 International semi tractor and trailer driven by Joby Morgan, 36, of Booneville, according to MHP.
The crash resulted in the death of a passenger in Rigual’s vehicle — Jasper Rigual, age five months, of Golden. The infant was properly fastened in a child safety seat, according to MHP.
Jose Rigual was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.
Morgan was uninjured.
The crash disrupted traffic flow on the highway for approximately two hours.
The investigation remains open.
