Ruby Mowrey has enjoyed two careers. Originally born and raised in Alabama, she moved to Pace, Fla., in 1969. She worked for a convenience store chain for many years, then in in 1990, she changed her entire career. She became an over the road truck driver. Mowrey has traveled all 48 states, Alaska and Canada. She enjoyed her career for about a decade. The last six months, before retirement, she drove and delivered firetrucks and ambulances for E-ONE Emergency Vehicles. She told of a firetruck she drove to Las Vegas, Nev., that had “tires taller than my head.” She also, to visit her son in the military, got to travel to Spain, accompanied by her sister. “Not bad for one of 10 children of an Alabama sharecropper,” she said a grin. She has four children, 15 grandchildren 20 great-grandchildren.
