The local hospital's Sports Medicine department will again offer special comprehensive sports physicals during their 24th annual event set for Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Arena.
"We will be providing athletic physicals to junior high and high school athletes from surrounding schools," said Certified Athletic Trainer Michelle Gifford, who is coordinating the event. "Time slots are also assigned for each school to help cut down the wait time."
Unlike previous events, the athletic physicals are offered free of charge this year and includes a sports medicine t-shirt. The exam includes screenings and assessments of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, ear, nose, throat, heart, lung and orthopedic.
Time slots are 5:30 p.m. for Biggersville students, 5:45 p.m. for Tishomingo County students, 6 p.m. for Alcorn Central students, 6:30 p.m. for Kossuth students and 7 p.m. for Corinth students.
Each student must have a signed waiver before a physical can be performed. The participation and waiver forms are available at each school and online at mrhc.org on the Rehabilitation page.
"Our sports medicine department designed this as an outreach to the community," said Gifford. "It's something we feel like is convenient for the coaches and the students. It's a way to make sure local kids get a physical before the summer begins."
Gifford said the department also helps out the local schools throughout the year.
"We send athletic trainers to cover games and practices free of charge to the school districts," she added. "It's really important to keep our community kids safe, healthy and in the game."
Last year the event got a new name with the Marla Shettles Memorial Athletic Physicals.
"We wanted to do something to honor Marla, who recently passed away from cancer," said Gifford. "She was always so instrumental in not only planning the event, but also volunteering. She even came to the event to help out while she was battling cancer."
Shettles was a physical therapist and the director of inpatient rehab at MRHC.
