Booneville voters have approved an additional tax on restaurants and hotels in the city to support development of tourism and parks and recreation in the city.

Tuesday’s referendum on the tax proposal passed 860 to 465 or 65.91 percent to 35.09 percent. The proposal had to receive over 60 percent of votes cast to be approved.

The plan will add a 2 percent additional tax on restaurants, hotels and motels in the city which will go into a special account, separate from the city’s general fund, to be used to promote tourism and parks and recreation options in the city.

The tax will begin being collected August 1.
