Children will soon have a new place to keep cool at Booneville’s West Side Park.

Work is nearing completion on the city’s new splash pad water play area, located beside the Kids Town playground at the former site of the park’s tennis courts.

Booneville Park and Recreation Director Jon Hill said they expect to have the project complete and ready for use within the next couple of weeks. An official opening date will be set by the park commission at their next regular meeting.

Hill said the original plan had been to open the splash pad and host a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Kids Town project on Memorial Day weekend, but rainy weather put the splash pad project behind.

He said they attempted to pour the concrete for the splash pad three weeks in a row and were foiled by rain each time before they were finally able to get the work done. The splash pad itself is now ready for operation, said Hill. Park employees are putting the finishing touches on dirt work and landscaping around the area which he said will be complete within the next couple of weeks, weather permitting.

Hill said they may do more extensive concrete work in the future around the pad, but they are working now to get the work done that must be completed so it can be opened for use during the hot summer months ahead.
