The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado struck Prentiss County last week.

The NWS’ Storm Prediction Center has issued a report stating a brief tornado with a rating of EF0 happened near County Roads 5131 and 5031 last Thursday. An EF0 designation is the lowest possible severity rating for a tornado, with wind gusts between 65-85 mph.

Prentiss County Emergency Management Director Bud Lindsey said the winds ripped the roof off a barn and severely damaged a house in that area around 1:30 p.m. last Thursday.

Numerous trees and power lines were also downed in the storm that took a path from southeast to northwest across the county, said Lindsey.

The same storm system, part of the remnants of Hurricane Harvey, also caused damage in neighboring Itawamba County where a stronger tornado damaged trees and several mobile homes in the Pratts and Friendship communities.
