Corinth officials have begun preparations for a busy election year with Corinth’s eight elected positions up for grabs.

While most Mississippi municipalities had elections last year, Corinth is one of a few exceptions across the state that holds its municipal general election in a different year.

It will be Corinth’s second election with the expanded Board of Alderman and voting focused more on individual wards. Four years ago was the first time that city residents did note vote for all of the alderman posts.

“Everyone will vote for mayor, police chief and the alderman at large,” said City Clerk Vickie Roach. “They will also vote for the alderman for their ward.”

Residents will vote for a total of four positions. The board includes one alderman for each of the five wards and a sixth alderman voted on by all residents.

The city’s general election will occur on Oct. 12. It is preceded by party primary elections in September, and it is not unusual for the outcome of some races to be determined in the primaries.

The primaries are set for Sept. 14 with runoffs, if needed, on Sept. 28.

Roach expects to have qualifying materials available at City Hall in late March. The candidate qualifying period will run from April 26 through July 16.

Although the political party committees certify the candidates, City Hall will collect the qualification papers and $10 fee on their behalf. Candidates who choose to run as independents must complete a petition with the signatures of 50 qualified electors.

Candidates running for one of the five alderman ward posts must reside in the appropriate ward.

Voter registration for the city is handled through the circuit clerk’s office at the courthouse. People who are not registered voters would need to register at least 30 days prior to the election date.
