CLINTON – Corinth did what it has all season.
Wear the opposition out.
The Warriors claimed the Class 1A/2A/3A State Championship behind its third straight postseason shutout. Paced by John Mathis’ seventh hat trick, CHS rolled to a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart on Friday night.
“Our defense put up a wall,” said CHS Head Coach Gregg Parker. “It has been the backbone of everything we have done this year.”
Corinth (21-1-2) didn’t waste any time in taking a quick lead. Estevan Garcia put the locals on the board less than five minutes into the contest. Mathis extended the count to 2-0 a short time later.
“John came up and told me that we needed to score early and get it over with,” said Parker.
Garcia did the honor as the Warriors recorded its 14th shutout of the campaign behind the play of keeper Cullen Grantham.
The state champs made it 3-0 when Mathis found John Foropoulos 45 seconds into the second half.
“We just kept applying the pressure,” said Parker. “I thought we worked the ball extremely well.”
Mathis applied the final nails with a pair of goals, giving him 43 this season.
“It’s fun to score goals, but it wouldn’t be possible without my teammates getting me the ball,” said the sophomore.
Corinth, which outscored the opposition 20-1 in the playoffs, ended the year 13-0-2 away from the friendly confines. The team also eclipsed the old school mark of 18 wins.
“We had a great crowd down there and that really gave us a boost,” said Parker. “This is a high water mark that the kids will remember and I’m proud to be part of it.”
