BOONEVILLE — Prentiss County Chancery Clerk David “Bubba” Pounds has been chosen to fill the unexpired term of former Prentiss County Superintendent Matt Smith on the Northeast Mississippi Community College Board of Trustees.
Pounds was named to the post as one of Prentiss County’s representatives on the college’s governing board this week by the county’s Board of Supervisors and will serve out the remainder of the term in the seat previously held by Smith.
Smith resigned as superintendent of Prentiss County Schools last week and was appointed principal of Kossuth High School.
Pounds is the youngest person ever to serve as Prentiss County Chancery Clerk. He was elected to the post in a 2008 special election to fill the unexpired term of now-Congressman Travis Childers. He previously served as a deputy chancery clerk since June 2006.
Pounds is an honors graduate of NEMCC and served in the student government association while at the school.
He has remained active in the college’s alumni community and currently serves as vice-president of the Northeast Alumni Relations Council.
NEMCC President Johnny Allen praised the Board of Supervisors’ decision to appoint Pounds to the board of trustees.
“Bubba is a fine example of a public servant,” Allen said. “We welcome his knowledge and wisdom to our board. He has a vision for the continued growth of Prentiss County and will be a significant player in county government in the future. This appointment will give him an opportunity to expand the role of the college as it strives to better serve its constituents in Prentiss County, as well as throughout its five-county district.”
